I start my day reading venture capital (VC) articles on TechCrunch, Axios, or VC blogs – it’s a great way to start my morning as it’s an industry I’m very interested in. DRW VC focuses on investing in companies in the fintech space, which is quickly evolving. By taking the time to catch up on all that has happened over the last 24 hours, I feel like I’m setting myself up for success in my work for the rest of the day.

I work on a small team, which means I’m constantly involved in all aspects of the team’s work. In the mornings, that might mean joining a call for a portfolio company, reviewing a term sheet for a company in our pipeline, or discussing promising companies internally or with co-investors. In screening potential investments, DRW looks for companies in which the firm can invest more than just capital — such as being a client, review of new products or adding other value—which has given me a unique perspective on investing.

After I grab lunch from the DRW café, I may join a preliminary call with a company to learn if it could be a potential investment fit. In these meetings, we hear relevant business updates and have the opportunity to ask questions. I am also working on a deep dive into the real estate tech industry. As part of this project, I’ve been researching investible technology trends in multiple segments of the property lifecycle, from the construction of a new building to investing in properties.

Working on a VC team that’s part of a larger firm has given me exposure to other teams relevant to my work, such as Convexity (DRW’s real estate group) and Cumberland (DRW’s cryptoasset trading group). The most rewarding part of the internship has been the ownership I’ve had over projects which make a meaningful impact on the team’s investments.
